STAC’s Statement on the National Science Board Dismissal

April 27, 2026

The Science and Technology Action Committee (STAC), a nonpartisan alliance of nonprofit, academic, foundation, and business leaders advocating for greater focus and funding of science and technology, issued the following statement in response to the National Science Board dismissal:

“The dismissal of the National Science Board is the latest in a troubling series of decisions creating instability at the National Science Foundation and across American science. At a time when, as of 2024, China has officially surpassed the United States in overall research and development spending, this sends exactly the wrong signal.

If the United States wants to lead in science and technology, strengthen national security, and ensure the benefits of discovery reach the American people, we need a collaborative, transparent policy environment with decision-making laser focused on bolstering science and technology in the best interests of the American people. This is a moment to defend and strengthen U.S, science and technology leadership, not dissolve it.”

The Science & Technology Action Committee (STAC) is a group of 25 non-profit, academic, foundation, and corporate leaders working to dramatically strengthen U.S. science and technology. The Committee is co-chaired by: Bill Novelli, Professor Emeritus and founder of Business for Impact at Georgetown University and former CEO of AARP, Sudip Parikh, CEO, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Executive Publisher of the Science Family of Journals, Mary Woolley, President & CEO of Research!America, and Keith Yamamoto, Vice Chancellor for Science Policy and Strategy at UCSF and Immediate Past President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
