The Science and Technology Action Committee (STAC), a nonpartisan alliance of nonprofit, academic, foundation, and business leaders advocating for greater focus and funding of science and technology, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget request:
“We are deeply concerned by the Administration’s proposed $5 billion cut to the National Institutes of Health and $4.6 billion cut to the National Science Foundation, 11% and 54% decreases relative to FY26 funding levels, respectively.”
Sustained and growing support for basic discovery research is essential. Breakthroughs in science provide the foundation for every transformative device, technology, therapeutic, and agricultural advancement that drives America’s economy, strengthens public health, and underpins our national security.
Weakening the federal government’s longstanding commitment to research and development would slow or reverse progress across these critical areas. At a time when global competitors are increasing their investments, these cuts risk undermining America’s leadership and influence around the world.
STAC urges Congress to continue its bipartisan leadership in recognizing the importance of strong, sustained funding for American science and research, as it did during FY26 negotiations.”
